For ease of use, we registered our email for Mozilla's #
sync function, to better store bookmarks and easily access web pages etc.

matrix homeserver enables us to maintain secure and encrypted communications.
The benefits of using federated protocols hosted (at least for now) by recognised and trusted third-party providers, for us at least, far outweighs any of the perceived negativity or potential 'online risks' associated with not self-hosting our own services in-house.
